THE WHITE HOUSE
The White House is the official residence and principal workplace of the president of the United States of America. It is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and is the oldest public building in Washington DC.
There are 132 rooms in the White House: 35 bathrooms, 412 doors, 147 windows, 28 fireplaces, 8 staircases, three lifts, a tennis court, a bowling alley, a movie theatre, a jogging track, a swimming pool, a putting green, a main kitchen, a diet kitchen and a family kitchen with five chefs working full-time.
The Blue Room is where the President receives his most important guests, like heads of state and very important people. The Red Room is one of the four state reception rooms. The East Room is the traditional reception room for large parties. The State Dining Room is used for formal dinners with heads of state and can seat up to 140 guests. The Oval Office is the President's office and workplace.
Public tours of the White House are self-guided and limited to groups of 10 people or more. They are available from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday and are scheduled on a first come, first served basis. Tours are requested through a member of Congress about one month in advance. There are about 5,000 visitors a day.
