The Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon is a ravine in Arizona, formed by the Colorado River. It is one of the Seven Wonders of the World as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Grand Canyon was created by the erosion of the Colorado River, which began to flow through the canyon about 17 million years ago. The Grand Canyon is 446 kilometres long, 29 kilometres wide and about 2 kilometres deep.
The Grand canyon contains different types of ecosystems and a great variety of both plants and animals. It is home to 1750 plant species, 17 species of fish, 57 species of amphibians and reptiles, 91 mammal species, 373 species of birds, and 8480 species of insects.
The Grand canyon is also a major tourist attraction; people from around the world come to visit it. Tourists can take a trip on a boat along the Colorado River, hike or ride mules through the Grand Canyon. From the North Rim to the South Rim, the land to the north and the south of the Grand Canyon respectively, there are some paths that lead to the bottom of the canyon. Here there is a place called Phantom Ranch with facilities for tourists to spend the night. Most people, however, drive up to the South Rim and admire the Grand canyon and take photos from there.
