New York
New York is the largest city in the USA. Also known as the Big Apple, it is the major cultural and financial centre of the nation with the largest number of banks and museums in the United States.
New York is situated on the North-eastern coast and is divided into five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx, the only borough attached to the mainland.
Manhattan was at first inhabited by Native Americans, then the Dutch bought the land for $ 24 and called it New Amsterdam. In 1664 the island was taken by the British, who gave it the name of New York, after the Duke of York, James Stuart.
Though being the smallest of the boroughs, Manhattan is the most important; all the places that New York is famous for are in Manhattan: the Empire State Building, Wall Street, Fifth Avenue, Broadway, Times Square, Little Italy, China Town, the UN Building, Rockefeller Center and Central Park.
New York is the most exciting city in the world, and one of the reasons is the diversity it offers. With over 8 million inhabitants, New York City is the most densely populated city in the United States. People living in New York come from every continent in the world, making the Big Apple a melting pot of different cultures and a microcosm of the entire human race. In New York there are more Irish than in Dublin, more Italians than in Venice and more Jews than in Tel Aviv. 36 percent of the people living in the city are foreign-born and the City Hall has translators for 150 different languages.
No matter what you do or where you go in New York, you will always have a thrilling experience!
