Rock Music
Rock music is a genre of popular music that developed in the UK and the USA in the 1960s, though it started in the 1940s and 50s with rock & roll. It mainly drew from rhythm and blues and country music, but has influences from blues, folk, jazz, and classical music.
Rock mostly uses the electric or acoustic guitar, the bass, the drums, keyboard instruments such as the piano, the organ and since the 1970s the synthesizers. In its purest form it has a three chord, a 4/4 beat, a strong back beat and a catchy melody. Typically rock music is song based.
A rock band or group usually consists of four musicians - quartet - an electric guitarist, a lead singer, a bass guitarist and a drummer. Some bands only have three members, in this case the band is called a trio, or two, called a duo, with the lead singer playing an instrument while singing.
From the late 1960s onwards rock music has blended with other genres developing different sub-genres: folk rock, jazz rock fusion, punk rock, heavy metal etc.
