Music
Music is the art or science of combining instrumental or vocal sound to produce harmony and to express emotions.
Sound is created by a vibration. Vibrations travel as waves and when they reach the ear, they are transformed into nerve impulses, which the brain perceives as sound. Vibrations, and therefore sound, can be produced with our voice or with a musical instrument.
Musical instruments are usually divided into four main groups: stringed, wind, percussion and keyboard.
Stringed instruments produce sound when we make their strings vibrate; we can do this by moving a bow over them, as in the case of the violin and the cello; or by plucking them, as in the case of the guitar and the harp.
We make sound on a wind instrument by blowing into it. Examples of wind instruments are the flute, the clarinet and the trumpet.
The drums are the most popular percussion instrument; they produce sound when we hit them; others, like the tambourine, make sound when they are shaken.
We play keyboard instruments by hitting their keys. When we hit a key, a hammer hits a string, which vibrates and creates sound.
Music is a privileged means for expressing feelings, and maybe for this reason it has always been so popular with youths. Music is their shared bond, it’s always all around them, it expresses their rage and frustration as well as their feelings of love and tenderness.
