Television
Watching television is one of the most popular pastimes in Britain. People of all ages spend hours in front of the TV every day, watching their favourite programmes.
TV is not only entertainment, it’s also a major source of information and knowledge. It can spread news in every corner of the planet in no time and broaden people’s horizons by making them acquainted with the remotest places and cultures.
However, television has also its negative aspects: sitting in front of the TV for too many hours is unhealthy as it implies a sedentary lifestyle. Being a couch potato increases the chances of becoming overweight and developing diseases.
John Logie Baird, the inventor of
television, transmitted the first television picture, from one room to another,
in 1926 and made the world’s first transatlantic broadcast in 1928.
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) launched its first regular service on August 22nd, 1932 and the first major international broadcast was the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, on 2nd June, 1953.
Besides being one of the most reliable sources of news in the world, the BBC is the producer of high-quality documentaries and drama series sold in over 100 countries throughout the world. The BBC is financed by licence fees and its programmes are never interrupted by commercials.
In Britain there are also a number of commercial channels, whose programmes are quite frequently interrupted by advertising, and the most important are Channel 4, Channel 5 and ITV.
