The Stars and Stripes
The flag of the United States of America, or simply the American flag, is the most important symbol of the nation.
It has horizontal stripes alternating red and white. Seven are red and six are white.
On the top left corner there is a rectangle, called the Union, containing fifty white stars.
The thirteen stripes represent the thirteen British colonies that declared independence from Britain and formed the Union. The fifty stars represent the fifty states that make up the United States of America.
The American flag's nicknames are The Star-spangled Banner, the Stars and Stripes, and the Old Glory.
