Jazz
Jazz is a type of music that developed in the USA in the early 20th century. It combines Afro-American music with European music.
It is not easy to define jazz as an important aspect of this type of music is improvisation. It drew from the music of African slaves who were taken from Africa to the southern states of the USA to work in the plantations. An example of this influence can be found in the call and response pattern which later developed in blues.
Essentially, Africa’s main contribution to jazz was rhythm while Europe’s contribution was harmony through church hymns, folk songs and military marches. Both rhythm and harmony contributed to enrich melody.
There have been different types of jazz over time: we had New Orleans style jazz and Dixieland jazz in the 1920s, swing in the 1930s, and bebop in the 1940s.
The most common musical instruments used in jazz are the saxophone, the trumpet, the piano, the double bass and the drums.
The most important jazz artists are Joe Oliver and Louis Armstrong.
