BUCKINGHAM PALACE
Buckingham Palace is the Queen’s official residence in London. It’s located in the centre of London and it’s very popular with tourists.
The palace is over 300 years old and it’s enormous! It’s got 775 rooms. It’s got 52 bedrooms and 78 bathrooms. It’s also got a swimming pool, a chapel, a cinema and a private underground tube station to be used in case of emergency.
When the Queen’s at home, there’s a special flag called the Royal Standard, flying on the flagpole, above the palace, when she's not at home there's the Union Flag on the roof of Buckingham Palace. When the Queen’s at home, there are also four Foot Guards in front of the palace, when she isn’t at home, there are only two.
The Queen’s Foot Guards are special guards at
Buckingham Palace; they are responsible for protecting the Royal Palace. The
guards wear a special uniform which is famous all over the world: they wear a
red jacket, black trousers and a big black bearskin hat, called the Busby Hat.
It’s over 45 centimetres tall, weighs nearly a Kilo and is made from real bear
fur.
Every day in the summer at 11:30 a.m. there’s the Changing of the Guard. The ceremony takes place in front of the palace and lasts 45 minutes.
The military band plays military music and sometimes pop music too. On royal birthdays the band plays Happy Birthday!
